UX Writing and Product Design in Digital Steel Industry

In an interface, it has great relevance in the success or failure of the experience, as it is precisely the means of communication, the point of mediation between the user and the technological solution.

Therefore, it is essential that both parties can understand each other. UX Writing, or the UX Writing segment, is precisely focused on writing in digital experiences, with the aim of providing accurate, direct, and timely information that can guide the user through the experience towards the satisfaction of their needs/objectives. In addition, one way to perceive the nuances of the importance of a digital product with appropriate writing is to bear in mind that when discussing the gains of the steel industry, the most obvious topics revolve around improving efficiency or reducing operational costs.

Digital Revolution or Industry 4.0

The year is 2022, and although we still don't have flying cars and silver clothing everywhere, digital universes are increasingly present in our lives. Stop and reflect for a moment: how dependent are you on your cell phone? With just a few taps, I dare say that almost anything is possible. From knowing the bus schedule, ordering and receiving a meal, paying bills, and so on... A few years ago, none of this was a reality, and we almost don't remember what that distant period called the past decade was like.

This little mental exercise serves to remind us how various digital technologies are already operating around us. The Industry 4.0 or Digital Revolution encompasses areas of technological innovation worthy of the best sci-fi movies, such as cloud computing, robotics, and artificial intelligence. And, even if it is not noticeable, many of them are already directly or indirectly integrated into our lives, as is the case with industrial segments.

According to the Industry Portal, the digital revolution directly affects supply chains, as it can act by improving resource usage, as well as the production of items or the provision of services on a large scale (2022). Just as it accelerated the pace of our lives, the industry has benefited from digital technologies and processes with the aim of improving its efficiency and, consequently, productivity and profitability. Currently, about 69% of industries use at least one type of digital technology. However, as the number of technologies increases, fewer companies adhere to the trend. When we increase the number of digital technologies to 10 or more, we have only 7% of companies. These data indicate that most industries are still in the early stages of the digitization process, and this can be seen in various ways, one of them being the potential for innovation in industrial companies (PORTES, 2022).

And the steel sector?

Within this scenario, we have the steel sector, which has been riding the wave through technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and systems integration. In this way, it is possible to build digital products and services that actively contribute to decision-making and detecting process improvement points and more efficient use of resources.

When we talk about digital products for the steel industry, we are addressing the materialization of these mentioned technologies (and others) in experiences and services for business users. It is important to keep in mind that digitalization is a process, meaning it does not happen magically overnight and requires the collaboration of all involved.

After all, their work routines can also benefit from the fruits obtained, and it is these people who have crucial information for the development of products aligned with the objectives. It is in this environment between business, people, and digital technologies that we find a conducive scenario for the work of professionals such as digital product designers and UX Writers (User Experience), which are the focus of our subject.

Digital Experience & User Experience

The construction of a digital experience that contributes to the business objectives and user needs involves a series of processes that ideally start with a thorough understanding of the problem before moving on to the solution itself. These two areas complement each other to make it possible to outline a strategy, scope, structure, skeleton, and, finally, an interface for this digital product that corresponds to the initial expectations (and needs), whether they are increasing the efficiency of an asset (equipment) with the support of artificial intelligence or being notified when an asset is not sending signals correctly through systems integration.

Product Design, or UX Design, has become very popular due to its intimate relationship with digitization processes and, in particular, for dealing with the visual aspects of the product. The interface is the point of contact where the user is guided through flows, buttons, tables, links, and so on. At this moment, I invite you again to reflect with me: what is the role of language and words in a digital experience?

Language is the instrument that unites all the parts of a digital product. In an interface, it has great relevance in the success or failure of the experience, as it is precisely the means of communication, the point of mediation between the user and the technological solution. Therefore, it is crucial that both parties can understand each other. This is where the role of the UX Writer, or the UX Writing segment, comes into play, which is precisely focused on writing in digital experiences, with the aim of providing accurate, direct, and timely information that can guide the user through the experience towards the satisfaction of their needs/objectives.

The Future of Steel Industry

One way to perceive the nuances of the importance of a digital product with appropriate writing is to consider that, when discussing the gains of the steel industry, the most obvious topics revolve around improving efficiency or reducing operational costs, to name a few.

And if we include in this story the issues related to process safety? How relevant is it for the business that users can make decisions with assertiveness and clarity when dealing with processes with high temperatures or combustible gases, for example? This is just one of the countless scenarios in which a coherent digital product process associated with new design techniques and knowledge can contribute to boosting and accelerating this journey, which is the digitization of the steel industry.
